More About Fillings
Do you have a toothache, sharp throbbing pain, or sensitivity to hot/cold food and beverages? You may need to get a filling, or to replace an existing one.
Minor tooth repairs
Preventing fracture in small to midsize restorations
Combatting moderate pressure upon chewing
Aesthetically restoring the natural smile. For example, in the case of existing silver fillings
With the advancements in technology, most patients prefer to preserve a natural look to their smile by getting composite (tooth colored) fillings.
A tooth filling replaces decayed or damaged tooth material in instances where the cavity or damage is relatively minor. Fillings protect teeth from further decay and pain. Fillings also reduce sensitivity by covering areas that are missing their protective enamel.
If your teeth are hurting or you think you have a cavity, schedule an appointment with us so we can put together a treatment plan to fix your pain.
Common Questions
The dentist starts by removing any of the decaying and dead tooth enamel that cannot be saved with a small drill, and then cleans out the cavity to prepare it for filling. They then place the filling material into the cavity, and finish by cleaning and polishing the tooth.
Temporary fillings are generally recommended in cases where multiple sessions are required to design and cast a permanent filling. Since walking around with an open cavity is dangerous for your oral and systemic health, a temporary filling will protect the gap while waiting for your permanent crown or filling.
